One of my major goals this year for myself was to have my AI and Blockchain works showcased in the US. It fills my heart to know through sheer grit and persistence, that reality was materialized. My heart was overwhelmed with abundance to have my work come home to Africa last year and this year, after being made to feel it would be impossible without support through institutional means. I am forever grateful to the Kenya NFT club for allowing me to reconnect my family and my spirit home. It’s healing and cathartic to have my work visible and appreciated, on my terms, by people who would otherwise have access in the reality I am working to shape. I then thought about the fact that in the current day so many people want to speak for me, use my voice and literal lived identity as their own without lived proximity, or claim that people like me don’t exist (Afro Indigenous descended from nations like what is now known as Kenya, who were brought to the US hundreds of years ago prior to the First Revolutionary War in the 1700's and are connected to the Indigenous peoples of the US continent through circumstances) and they paint it stripped of my lived reality. People that look like me who come from where I come from are more than ‘urban’ typecast AI visuals and data extraction points, and we embrace our identity in the face of inhumanity. I have spent years working this logic through data sets trained on biased data, and training LoRAs to allow imaginative futures to thrive in blockchain space and beyond. Blockchain is where I primarily reside, and want more people to realize is a space available to them to flourish through the example I have set. I am a living exception to the rule of Blockchain and AI right now, operating within these spaces. But I don’t want it to stay that way. Deconstructing what it means to be human, with melanated skin operating in heavily commodified and misunderstood spaces is a privilege I do not take lightly.
